~ February 14, 2010 ~

I received an email and the photos below from Martin Bashue who now lives in Surabaya, Indonesia with his wife Sherry.
I have asked him to write more about the work that he and his wife do with the "Street Kids" in Cambodia.

My wife, Sherry and I take care of about 20 street kids in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.  Photo in front of their school about 2004

Marty and Sherry Bushue at a wedding in Phnom Penh with some of our "former" street kids.

The Cambodian kids were begging for food on the streets of Phnom Penh when we were posted there with the State Dept.  We got to know them and discovered they were really nice kids, not the glue-sniffers and thieves one usually hears about.  We put them into school and they do well.  Some were 12-13 years old when they went into the first grade but after working hard, they tested up a couple of grades and will soon be graduating from high school.  We have supported them for about 6 years now with donations from family and friends. We go back to Phnom Penh frequently and of course we are in touch almost daily by email.  They used to beg for food, now they beg for more internet time.  You can see more on these kids at our website, http://www.cambodianschoolkids.com.  We recently obtained non-profit status and hope to attract multiple small donations to keep these kids afloat and off the dangerous streets of Cambodia.

We like to say we are homeless but actually I'm an electrical engineer working for the US State Dept. managing new embassy construction overseas.  So we have been "drifting" from country to country the past 12 years, beginning with Saudi Arabia, Uganda, Rome, Cambodia, Burma, and now Indonesia. We still call Anchorage home with a house and family there.   After WHS I graduated from UA in Fairbanks and spent a few years in the Army. After working in Anchorage as an engineer and raising our kids, we travelled a little to Russia and China looking for business opportunites and decided that it would be easier to travel with a paycheck so we ended up with the US State Dept.  We'll probably be here in Indonesia another year before getting assigned elsewhere.
